Family: Rubiaceae (Madder family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: June - December

With its small (~1 cm) flowers, the Virginia Buttonweed is easy to miss in its moist to wet environments. It is a spreading, matted annual or perennial that has woody root crowns. Its flowers are cross-shaped, with four white or pinkish petals. The distinguishing characteristics of Virginia Buttonweed are its style is split or cleft in two, and the stipules at the base of its leaves are not hairy.

Virginia Buttonweed is very similar to the Common Buttonweed (Diodia teres) which does not have a split style and is more likely to be found in dry habitats.
