St. Andrew's-cross is an erect shrub, usually with a single stem unless it has been cut or otherwise disturbed. Its flowers have four light yellow petals in the form of a St. Andrews cross. Its leaves usually variable in size and shape, widest near the middle.
In the field, St. Andrew's Cross can be readily distinguished from Low St. Andrew's-cross (Hypericum stragulum) by its overall form; Low St. Andrew's-cross is decumbent and has multiple prostrate stems arising from the rootstock.
