Garlic Pennycress is native to Europe and has been introduced into eastern United States. It is typically found on roadsides, fields, and other disturbed situations.

Garlic Pennycress's genus Mummenhoffia is named for Klaus Mummenhoff (Department of Biology, Botany, University of Osnabrück, Barbarastrasse 11, 49076 Osnabrück, Germany).
