Family: Phrymaceae (Lopseed family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: June - September

Square-stemmed Monkeyflower flowers have pedicels 20–45 mm long, and its leaves are all sessile.

Its main stem has four rounded, almost square, angles, which give it part of its common name 'square-stemmed'. The other part of the common name 'monkeyflower' it given because the flower is thought to resemble a monkey's face.

It closely resembles Winged Monkeyflower (Mimulus alatus), but that species has nearly sessile flowers with pedicels only 2–15 mm long.
